This is the first time we've seen the edge of the new LG Nexus and it reveals quite a lot. For starters, we have a different button placement on this device than on the first generation Nexus 5. The power and volume buttons are now on the same side and are positioned much further down the phone than on the first version. Note: Like on the previous leaked image, we've Photoshopped out the background here to protect the identity of our source.
The buttons look as though they might have slightly chamfered edges, and I'd go out on a limb to say they'll be ceramic once again. What this means for the other side of the phone we can't say. We asked our source whether the edges of the second generation Nexus 5 are metal, and were told “probably not”, but nothing beyond that.
The image also shows how much the camera 'pimple' protrudes from the back of the device. The best thing about the image though, is that it explains why we've never seen a hint of buttons on the sides in previous leaked images. It's because, like the original Nexus 5 by LG, the Nexus 5X has reverse-angled sides to allow better grip.
Now that we've seen the sides of the Nexus 5X we can see just how similar the design is to the original Nexus 5. Reverse-angled sides, same display diagonal, same Google partnership. It's not hard to imagine LG and Google dusting off the old Nexus 5 schematics and simply throwing in some new hardware. With that in mind, we're expecting a very similar sized phone, although we're hoping for smaller bezels.
One thing you will notice in the side-by-side image above is just how much thinner the new Nexus 5 is. We've said it before and we'll say it again: rather than have a protruding camera assembly on the back of a thin phone, why not just fill it out with a bigger battery? If the new and old Nexus 5 phones were the same thickness, we'd probably be looking at a 15-20 percent larger battery and no camera pimple for the new model.
We already kind of knew that the 2015 LG Nexus would come in black, white or blue color options, so we also asked our source what shade of blue it would be. We couldn't get an exact answer but it sounds as though Google will opt for a bold shade of blue for the Nexus 5X, like it did for the red Nexus 5 in 2013. We're betting on an electric sky blue, possibly something like the iPhone 6c.
We still haven't found an image of the front of the Nexus 5X, but we'll keep digging. Considering how closely this new image lines up with factory schematic renders (check our Nexus 5 (2015) rumor roundup if you haven't seen them), we can only assume the Nexus 5X might also have stereo front-facing speakers.
If you're out there in Google or LG land and want to drop us a face-on image of the new Nexus, feel free to use the 'Have a tip?' button on the side bar on the AndroidPIT home page. In the meantime we'll keep looking, but with just three weeks left until the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus are launched in San Francisco, we expect the leaks to start coming thick and fast.
What do you think the front of the Nexus 5X will reveal? Will you be buying one?
